Broken pipes, water heaters or natural floods can cause severe damage. But quick action can do a lot to reduce harm and save treasured possessions. To prevent damage, the most important thing you can do is remove moisture as quickly as possible. Use fans to circulate air, and open windows if outside temperature is above 60 degrees. Wipe furniture dry, open drawers, cabinets and closets to enhance drying. Try to raise furniture from wet surfaces by placing aluminum foil, plastic lids or other waterproof items beneath the legs. Prop up the cushions of upholstered furniture so they can dry more evenly.

Remove wet area rugs but do not lift tacked down carpet without professional help – this could promote shrinkage.   Get rid of as much water as possible by mopping and blotting, but do not use an ordinary household vacuum to remove water.

Keep in mind the dangers of electricity combined with water. Do not use electrical appliances on wet carpets or floors and never enter a room with standing water if the electricity is still on.

Don't hesitate to call for professional help. Damage from water and bacteria growth can begin in hours. Quick action could make the difference between restoration and destruction.
